Review: SNAFU Con – Year 2
September 22, 2011
Last year, I went to SNAFU Con and found it to be fun and worth the price of admission, which is why I went ahead and prepaid for this year’s con, with the assumption that the date would be the same (weekend toward the end of October). Well, the date changed and it was actually Friday September 9 — Sunday September 11, 2011 instead. This was a bit problematic as we had other events planned for the weekend, so instead of staying at the hotel for the weekend, we stayed home and visited Friday night after work, and then again on Sunday afternoon.
Review: SNAFU Con
October 27, 2010
Well, SNAFU Con has come and gone. It was nicer than what I expected, though not as good as Fanime (which isn’t surprising in the least, especially since this was their first year). I was fairly impressed with what they did with the space they had and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what they do with it next year. One of the things that they offered (which I really liked) was the option to purchase your ticket for next year for $15; they also stated that next year would be 3 days instead of 2 (to be fair it was more like 1.5).
SNAFU Con imminent!
October 21, 2010
As I mentioned last week, SNAFU Con is starting shortly, so shortly in fact that it is tomorrow! So get your cosplay going and head to the GSR! Unfortunately, I couldn’t convince Jon to join me at the convention, but I will definitely be there both days, and in costume. For those of you still on the fence, here’s some resources for your perusal: SNAFU Con’s Official Website PDF of the Floor Map PDF of the Schedule Official Twitter Account — @SNAFUCon See you there!
SNAFU Con coming up shortly
October 13, 2010
Sometime in the last year, the UNR anime club decided that instead of having their annual Halloween party, they would have a con instead. This year will be the first (hopefully), annual SNAFU Con! SNAFU stands for Sierra Nevada Anime Fans Unite (it also stands for something else, but that’s a highly technical military term and not applicable to this discussion).
Review: Riding Shotgun (Manga)
August 24, 2010
Gun and Tits, a simple recipe for a happy Jon Last month I was linked the Tortucam video on YouTube, which was totally awesome. It’s a turtle running about which some kick ass background music. Makes me which I was a Turtle too. I liked the music so much, I went and found it on Amazon. The part that really confused me was that it was labeled “Manga Soundtrack”. I wasn’t sure why a manga needed a soundtrack, but the music was kick’n enough to warrant investigation. After reading the manga, I’m pleased that I did.
Zombie Review: Highschool of the Dead
August 10, 2010
Saeko Busujima (Kendo) Recently a friend recommended to me a new manga by the name of “Highschool of the Dead” (Editor’s note: the manga uses “highschool” as one word, so when referring to the title we will as well, though the correct use is 2 words: high school). He described to me the basic story following high school students during a zombie apocalypse and to be honest I wasn’t all that enthused. I’m not a fan of the horror/thriller genre in basically any media. The three items that convinced me to give it a try was A) my friend thought one of the characters in the story was very much like me (it involves being trained by Blackwater) B) It’s got some good (funny) lines and C) Tits. Tits sell anything. After checking out the series, I’m glad I did. Enough so that I think everyone should check it out.
Zombie Review: Gungrave
August 9, 2010
A friend recently recommended some new anime to me: Gungrave. Some of the guys that did Trigun were involved in this as well which also piqued my interest. Gungrave is about the same length as Trigun (approximately 650 minutes), so it is a fairly quick watch. Overall I found it quite amusing, except for one little thing…. There will be some minor generic spoilers with relation to the story progression, though nothing terribly specific.
Review: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Anime)
July 26, 2010
Cosplay of Yoko from Gurren Lagann, taken at Fanimecon 2010. Copyright Richard Tom. This weekend I spent some of my free time watching Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, or more simply Gurren Lagann. This is by no means a new series (it has been out since 2007) I just never got around to watching it. I had heard mixed reviews about it, especially around the character of Yoko. Anyways, after seeing Yoko done well in cosplay, I thought I should endeavor to see such as a fantastic series. Now that I’ve finished watching it, I figured I’d share my thoughts. NO SPOILERS

I’m back writing brief movie reviews. Two in fact today. I know they aren’t new movies, but I think they both.. uh..sucked. First was Wedding Crashers. I heard it was a comedy. Well, I dont think it was that funny. About halfway through the movie I “realized” that it wasnt a comedy per say, it was a romantic comedy. Even looking at it from the romantic comedy point of view — I don’t think there was enough humor.
