GFI Vipre Enterprise for Mac – Run away logs
August 16, 2013
Yesterday at the office we discovered that GFI Vipre for Mac has a “small” run away logging problem. The antivirus logs to /private/var/log/vipred_stdout.log and /private/var/log/vipred_stderr.log — The latter of which being the problem file. stderr on numerous machines was in excess of several gigabytes in size. While we never bothered to correctly address the issue, Alex “fixed” it by putting a script into JAMF Casper Suite to rm the file.
No internet access today? Blame McAfee

Last night my mother complains to me that “nothing is working” which eventually gets translated to “the internet is down”. I show up to begin my standard diagnostic work. I don’t believe that it’s my Mother’s doing, because I long ago trained her to click “No” to everything — even if she ends up in an infinite loop (e.g. Flash install). Her computer randomly breaking down is actually something of a rarity. I ended up spending an hour doing all the standard reboots, entering safe mode, diagnostics, network reboots… until… McAfee.
When QA Fails... Miserably
March 4, 2008
At the office we use Symantec anti-virus. Recently we upgraded to Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 which includes Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Proactive Threat Protection and lastly… Network Threat Protection. The reason why I single out that last component is because it contains MASSIVE amounts of failure — or lack of QA work. This last week I finally managed to convince one of our off site workers to upgrade Symantec. Shortly there after I was told that they could no longer connect to their Wireless Access Point.
