I’ve been reading the news this morning when I came across two intresting (and related) articles. First was U.S. keeps control of Internet computers by CNN and the other was US won’t let go of master domain servers by ZDnet AU. The headlines alone make it sound like the US runs the internet, Or more specficially, the Root Name Servers. The following bits were pulled from CNN:
The U.S. government will indefinitely retain oversight of the main computers that control traffic on the Internet, ignoring calls by some countries to turn the function over to an international body, a senior official said Thursday.
In a worst-case scenario, countries refusing to accept U.S. control could establish their own separate domain name system and thus fracture the Internet into more than one network. That means two users typing the same domain name could reach entirely different Web sites, depending on where they are. -Been there, done that
And from ZDNet: At the moment, the U.S. government maintains control of the Internet’s “root”—the master file that lists what top-level domains are authorised—
If your reading this — you probably know enough about technology to know this is a flat out lie — but for thoes that dont know — ITS A FLAT OUT LIE. The United States doesn’t controll the Root Name Servers, in fact it only controlls 3 of the 13 (if you include NASA). Thats not even half — in fact — most of the machines that are Root Name Servers are physically outside the USA. The US couldn’t do jack to the internet if they tried. If they did try to muck up the records in the Root Name Servers they do controll — thoes name servers would be promtly removed from trust by the rest of the internet.
Please — CNN, ZDNet & The rest of the news world — Report the facts, not this bullshit that you make up.
