The last couple days in the office have been slow, most everyone was out of town for one reason or another. Anyways, in the mean time I’ve been looking for something else to “do”. I get bored very quickly with doing the same thing for long periods of time (like games) which is why I can never hold an MMORPG for very long. I was thinking about picking up MUDS again, but I dislike reading that much. Anyways, I saw another article scroll across my screen about SecondLife. Now SL isn’t new to me, I’ve mucked about with it once or twice before. I figured what the hell and gave it a try again. I think the main problem is the intro curve… SL seems rather pointless and small if you don’t pay attention to whats going on around you.
For Example the starting island (after the tutorial) isn’t that big, and I couldn’t find a sandbox because I didn’t know what to look for. After a while of looking at the map, I figured out how to jump to different islands. The one major difference between now and earlier when I tried is that you can teleport anywhere now, where as previously you had to use a telehub to goto another telehub. Regardless, the system now is much better for just exploring and hopping around.
So needless to say I’m currently selling my soul to SL. Mainly because I joy the style. Its not really a game, its about creativity, exploring and interacting. I mainly enjoy the creativity. Its fun to fiddle around and create prims (basic building blocks) and add simple scripting to them. The language is basically java — as much as I hate it, I understand it. So far I don’t have anything intresting made, but I’ve only been playing for a few days.
Also, if your an SL’r and want to say Hi in game, the SL logo is a link to my home in Seu (by home I mean fortified underground bunker that no one but myself can access).
