I thought I’d take a few minutes today to share my opinion of Dollhouse. It is a series by Joss Whedon, the man behind Buffy, Angel, and (more importantly) Firefly. I’m not some crazy fanboy, but I do think that Whedon’s done some really interesting things with his shows, and overall does a very good job. As for Eliza Dushku, I’ve got nothing against her. She is fairly attractive overall and does a good job acting.
Dollhouse, as a premise, seems really interesting. You’ve got a bunch of “people” who are blank slates that could be programmed to do anything. The only problem is that this premise is sort of tossed together the first episode. There are a lot of hard jump cuts between different scenes without any explanation of what is going on, whatsoever. Granted, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what is going on. My main issue is that with nothing explained, it leaves you a bit off balance, and the constant jumps keep you off balance. By the end of episode 1 was I was saying “Yea, Ok. I get it, but I’m not really sure that this is something I want to keep watching.”
Episode 2 (“The Target“) was much smoother and more interesting. That being said, it also introduced even more back story. Maybe I’d just prefer things to be taken a little slower. I’d rather you introduce me to series and the basic premise, then start bringing in topics like Alpha, what happened “before” and that Echo is obviously not being completely “blanked”. So… interesting, but I’m still not sure how I feel about the show long term.
Oh, and per the title: so far every episode Eliza Dushku has ended up naked at some point in time (and I’m not counting the fact that she gets naked in the intro). I wonder if that isn’t the entire premise for the show, an excuse for her to get naked or wear some skimpy outfit on a regular basis.
